He then went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Chicago Medical School where he served as chief medical resident for an additional year after graduation. Dr. Balamuthusamy also pursued a fellowship in nephrology at Tulane University in New Orleans. He served as the chief nephrology fellow during his second year of training.

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys: including the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy.
