Get to know Neurologist Dr. Leah A. Thronaum, who serves patients in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Dr. Thronaum is a CentraCare neurologist with subspecialty training in headache medicine. She  has a special interest in the management of primary and secondary headaches and atypical facial pain.

From diagnosing a particular type of headache syndrome to designing a tailored treatment plan that works for the patient, a headache specialist is a capable ally and can be a vital addition to one’s migraine/headache support team. Dr. Thronaum has particular expertise in performing injection techniques such as head and face nerve blocks, trigger point injections, spheno-palatine ganglion blocks, as well as neurotoxin injections such as Botox for therapeutic purposes. She also has neuro-modulation experience with use of single pulse trans-cranial magnetic stimulation devices & trans-cranial electrical stimulation.

Headache medicine quickly became Dr. Thronaum’s passion as she, time and time again, witnessed the burden and impact people with headache disorders are confronted with. It’s a tricky thing for people to understand how this condition, which doesn’t present with visible symptoms, can be so disabling. Her goal is for her patients to better understand their own role in the management of chronic and complex neurological issues, and to arm them with the knowledge required to make the best medical and neurologic choices to improve their quality of life.

At the start of her academic career, Dr. Thronaum attended Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine and earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2012. From there, she went on to complete her internship and residency at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Subsequent to her training, she attained board certification in neurology through the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry, an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in disorders of the nervous system (neurologists) and to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders (psychiatrists).

In order to remain up to date in her field, Dr. Thronaum maintains a professional membership with the American Academy of Neurology, the American Headache Society, the National Headache Foundation, the International Headache Society, and the American Interventional Headache Society.

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurologists are licensed medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles of patients. They examine a patient’s mental and physical status, conduct medical tests and scans, and evaluate the results to diagnose and treat the patient.
