  • I am on a naturopathic weight loss program and passing a lot of gas. Is it normal?

Part of a weight loss program may be too easy more fibrous foods. If this is the case and you're eating more fiber than is normal. Your gut bacteria feeds off of the fiber and in exchange releases gas. It's temporary and will improve as you continue to eat a similar amount of fiber daily. If this is not the case, then you may be eating something that your body is reacting to. In this case, we call it food sensitivity or food intolerance. It means the same thing. The third reason you may be having gas is that your digestive system is weak and not tolerating the type of diet you've been put on. Please let your naturopathic doctor know of any new symptoms so tau they can help you through your health journey. READ MORE

  • What are the natural ways in which I can deal with hair loss?

Hi, There are several factors to take into consideration when assessing hair loss. In a 34-year-old women, one of the first places I look at is thyroid disorder, stress, and ferritin, CRP, ESR levels. These will further help give a broader understanding of why you may have hair loss. I find that if ferritin level is below 70, women can start having hair loss. READ MORE

  • My daughter is grinding her teeth. What could be the reason behind this?

It's not uncommon for children to grind their sleep (especially in their sleep). It definitely can happen when baby teeth are being lost and permanent teeth are coming in. They do grow out of it. If it's to the point where it's keeping her up at night, causing jaw pain, showing signs of wear or damage to her teeth or gum, definitely talk to her dentist to see what they can help with. What you can do in the meantime, if those issues arise, is find out if she's doing it because of stress, anxiety or nervousness. See if she's getting plenty of water to stay hydrated and start looking into if her diet is involved with what she's doing. I hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Can I give fruit juices to a child with high fever?

Fruit juices should be avoided during sick times because the increase in sugar can feed the bacteria. However, in general fruit juices should be avoided. It does not boost the immune system and bring the fever down. READ MORE

  • Is my vitamin b12 deficiency from my change in diet?

Vitamin B12 is naturally found in meat products. Therefore, if you have changed your diet then you may notice a decrease in your serum vitamin B12 levels. The blood test is not really an accurate test of what's actually stored in your body. It's only measuring what's circulating. Your doctor should follow that up with an MMA test. MMA levels will increase in the body at early stages of B12 deficiency. See this link for more info: https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx?contenttypeid=167&contentid=methylmalonic_acid_blood In addition, serum B12 levels can change depending on other factors too, so again, it's not a reliable test when checking stored levels of B12 (cellular levels). If you are planning to be vegetarian or vegan, I recommend you to take methylcobalamin just because you can start having health issues once your cellular stores are depleted. I hope this helps. • Is there a natural treatment for strep throat in kids?

I would recommend using antibiotics especially in children because although strep throat itself is not dangerous, it can lead to serious complications such as scarlet fever, kidney inflammation, rheumatic fever, and post-strep reactive arthritis. Antibiotic use will reduce the risk of those complications. I would suggest using a probiotic 2-3 hours after each dose of antibiotic. This would at least decrease diarrhea related to antibiotic use and replenish the gut microbiome. Also, eating prebiotic foods to help feed the probiotics would be good. READ MORE

  • Can you suggest natural laxatives that are safe for elderly patients?

Even natural laxatives when used too much can become a concern for anyone, especially in seniors. I highly suggest booking an appointment with a Naturopathic doctor to determine the cause of her constipation. In the meanwhile, she can increase water (as long as there's no restriction from her doctor with water intake due to her health) and fiber intake. Remember, if you do fiber that you must increase water or you'll only compound the issue. You can eat more foods with fiber or you can get a fiber supplement. I'd follow the directions on the product label. READ MORE

Yes there are natural therapies to help with high blood pressure. Some aspect of high blood pressure can be genetics. However, for the factors that aren't genetics related, he most definitely can see improvements in his blood pressure by utilizing natural therapies. It sounds like he has a very stressful job which in my opinion can be a huge cause of high blood pressure. • How can I prevent cough and cold in the changing season?

First and foremost, you need to boost your immune system. You do this by improving sleep quality, decreasing stress or increasing stress resilience, looking into food intolerances and eliminating them as well as improving your digestive and immune system. My go-to for all clients is Black Elderberry Syrup by Gaia (no affiliation). A great anti-viral and yummy syrup that even kids enjoy it. Take it when you first feel something coming on or if you know you're going to be super stressed or you know the weather is changing. If you can take it preventively, you'll be surprised how effective it is. Also, take it at the start of a cold/cough and you'll shorten the duration of sickness by up to 4 days. READ MORE
