Get to know Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Julie Sanchez, who serves patients in Texas.

A caring pediatric surgeon, Dr. Sanchez is affiliated with Austin Pediatric Surgery, which is a surgical specialty of Dell Children’s Medical Center. She operates out of the offices in Austin and Cedar Park, Texas.

Her clinical focus is to provide expert diagnosis and surgical treatment of a variety of general surgical conditions for children of all ages. Her scope of practice ranges from perinatal consultations to complex surgical management of liver and biliary disease,  tumors, birth defects, minimally invasive surgery, breast disease and traumas. Pediatric surgery is a subspecialty of surgery involving the surgery of fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Pediatric surgeons are trained as general surgeons who then go on to get specialty training to perform surgery on children and neonates with various congenital and oncologic issues.

With her initial interest being architecture, Dr. Sanchez discovered her passion for medicine after becoming a volunteer at Brackenridge Hospital. She chose pediatric surgery because it allows her to care for children, empower parents, and be a mentor. She enjoys meeting parents, caring for their newborn and seeing their child grow into a young adult, and is blessed to be part of the journey.

Alongside her work at APS, Dr. Sanchez is a Clinical Affiliate Professor of The UT-Dell Medical School. She can also be found on staff at North Austin Children’s Hospital and St. David’s Main Hospital where she provides complex neonatal surgical care. She is also the lead surgeon for the Dell Children’s Intestinal Rehabilitation Program.

Dr. Sanchez is also the co-founder of Spoonie Threads, an adaptive clothing and accessory company with a focus on Diabetic, Ostomy, Tube and Port care.  Her medical expertise offers unique insights to the materials and fit that would be best for patient care. Some of her best ideas for products have come as solutions to parents’ concerns.

Shortly after arriving in Austin, Dr. Sanchez established the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Austin and became the lead physician for the Austin Safe Kids Coalition. Her firm belief in injury prevention gave birth to the first Injury Prevention program in Austin and the Children’s Education and Community Resource Center. In 2006, her “Boost Now! Join the Buckleteers,” a booster seat program to increase the usage of booster seats for children, received national recognition.

The team of expert surgeons at Austin Pediatric Surgery (APS) specialize in surgical treatments for infants, children, and adolescents. From the repair of an inguinal hernia to the complex care of a premature baby with congenital anomalies, the surgeons of APS have committed themselves to providing state-of-the-art pediatric surgical care for children across Austin and Central Texas. They utilize the most advanced surgical techniques, minimally invasive technologies, and over 20 years of experience in caring for infants, children, and adolescents in their community.

Academically, Dr. Sanchez received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from The University of Texas at Austin in 1989 and her medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical School at Dallas in 1993. She then completed her general surgery training at the State University of New York in 1998 and a pediatric trauma and research fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1999. Upon completing her fellowship, she returned to New York to complete training in pediatric surgery at the State University of New York in 2001.

Licensed to practice medicine in Texas, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery and pediatric surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Fellow of the American Pediatric Surgery Association, Dr. Sanchez is a proud member of the Texas Medical Association, Operation Kid Docs, whose mission is to provide surgical services to disadvantaged children of the World, and is a TETAF-NICU and TRAUMA Surveyor.
