Get to know Internist Dr. Hermena Cerphy, who serves patients throughout the State of Florida.
Recognized as a compassionate and dedicated internist, Dr. Cerphy is deeply committed to serving her patients. Her approach to patient care is rooted in empathy, warmth, and the belief that building strong relationships with patients is key to achieving better health outcomes. She takes the time to get to know her patients on a personal level, listening to their concerns, fears, and hopes for their health.
In her role as Regional Chief Medical Officer for ChenMed’s Central and North Regions, Dr. Cerphy is responsible for the region’s operations. She is grateful to ChenMed for expanding her role beyond just seeing patients and giving her the business and management tools she needs to make a broader impact on healthcare. She is a leader who leads by example, inspiring her colleagues to provide the same level of care and compassion to their patients.
Her journey to becoming a physician began in her childhood. Despite hating going to the doctor’s office as a child, her own pediatrician’s approach of being soothing and empathetic left a lasting impression on her.
Inspired to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Cerphy went on to study pre-med at the University of Miami and then attended the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
After completing her residency in internal medicine at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital, she worked as an ER physician at the Miami VA Medical Center, where she enjoyed providing instant relief to patients. However, her curiosity about her patients’ long-term health outcomes led her to switch to primary care at the VA hospital, where she cared for mostly elderly patients from underserved communities.
With an unwavering commitment to her specialty, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Her upbringing in Haiti, where she was very close to her grandparents, helped inspire her calling to care for seniors. Dr. Cerphy saw the difference that regular medical care could make in the lives of elderly patients and wanted to have a greater impact on their physical and emotional health. Her passion for providing care to the neediest people is driven by her childhood memories of seeing a lot of people in need in Haiti who didn’t have access to care.
At ChenMed, Dr. Cerphy has found a home that allows her to provide the type of care she believes in. With a smaller patient panel, she has the freedom to see her patients as often as she wants and give more personal attention to each patient. For her, getting to know her patients deeply allows her to be a champion of their care and build the bonds that translate into better outcomes.
Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.
Providing compassionate care to people in need, Dr. Cerphy is involved in medical mission trips to Haiti, Ghana, and other places. Although she understands the fear of getting shots, she is proud of her children for embracing the family tradition of service to others.
Outside of work, Dr. Cerphy is a family-oriented person. She spends her free time with her husband and three children, enjoying the outdoors by going to the pool or local parks. She also loves reading books in her leisure time.
The family has a musical background and enjoys playing music together, with Dr. Cerphy on the flute, her husband singing, and the children playing the piano.
