An established hepatologist, Dr. Mena is the Medical Director of the Pasadena Liver Center, and serves as the President and CEO of the California Liver Research Institute. He has over 20 years of experience and is dedicated to further research on all aspects of liver disease, including better ways to diagnose and manage liver damage.

The Pasadena Liver Center provides patient-centered service by caring for the whole person.. They use a team approach in providing health care and involve the patient as part of our team decision making process. They organize and coordinate health care services to meet the needs of their patients, especially those with complex medical care. California Liver Research Institute is a non-profit organization focused on the advancement of treatment and management of liver diseases. Graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from UCLA, Dr. Mena completed a Post-Baccalaureate Program at the University of California, San Diego, and earned his medical degree from the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine. Wanting to further his education, he completed his residency in internal medicine at the White Memorial Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. Finally, he completed his fellowship in hepatology at the USC Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (FAASLD), he is an active member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver.

Among his other roles, Dr. Mena can be found on staff at the USC Transplant Center, Cedars-Sinai Transplant Center, and Huntington Memorial Medical Center.

An enthusiastic researcher, his interests include nonalcoholic fatty-liver disease in adult and pediatric patients, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in response to chronic Hepatitis C and Liver Cancer and coordinating outreach programs in the Latino, Armenian, and Egyptian communities to better understand the role of Hepatitis B and C and cirrhosis within these populations. He also focuses on managing and curing patients with primary liver cancer.

Hepatology is the branch of medicine that incorporates the study of liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, and pancreas as well as the management of their disorders. A hepatologist is a specialist who manages disorders in these areas.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Mena has been the recipient of the Hispanic Health Leadership Award (2019), Health Care Visionary Award by the American Liver Foundation (2020), Patients' Choice Award (2020, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2011, 2009, 2008), On-Time Doctor Award (2020, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015), and Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2020, 2018, 2017).
