PCP refusing to listen?
I’m sorry to learn that you’ve been suffering for so many years. Although diabetic neuropathy is common, the onset of your pain has likely been caused by falling and sustaining injury to your lumbar spine (lower back), left hip joint or both. Unfortunately, the family practitioner (PCP), although knowledgable in diagnosing and treating chronic health conditions, are not typically trained in disorders of the neuro musculoskeletal system. The injuries that are acquired by accidental slip and falls, automobile accidents, athletic (sports injuries), etc., are best diagnosed and treated by orthopedic specialists, doctors of osteopathy, neurologists and/or chiropractors. You can ask for a referral to any one of the specialists mentioned above. I recommend a thorough musculoskeletal examination of the lumbar spine and left hip joint followed by xrays of both areas. An MRI scan of the lumbar spine and possibly the left hip may also be necessary to rule out lumbar disc herniation and/or lumbosacral and left hip internal derangement. Following a proper diagnosis, there are options including physical therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, pain management and/or surgery, as a last resort, to reduce your pain and discomfort. READ MORE
Can a chiropractic adjustment help me sleep better?
Hi there and thank you for your thoughtful question. Studies have been done using relatively small samples of patients with insomnia and the efficacy of chiropractic spinal manipulation in the treatment of them. Most of the patients did report improvement. If headaches and/or neck pain was a contributing factor to the patient’s sleeplessness and medical issues have been ruled out, craniocervical (head/neck) manipulation has shown to have mild-moderate positive effects. However, these results are anecdotal (subjective) rather than reproducible data. Teenagers do not typically suffer from insomnia. A thorough consultation and examination, followed by cranial and full spine X-rays should be performed prior to spinal manipulation. I also suggest that the chiropractor you choose, should you decide to give it a try, contact your pediatrician, with your parent’s approval, for a more comprehensive medical history. Can a chiropractor help with tingling fingers?
Hi there and thank you for your thoughtful question. Tingling fingers is typically a symptom of nerve compression, somewhere along the spinal nerves that exit the cervical (neck) spine and descend the upper extremities, down to the fingertips. Other medical issues that can potentially cause paresthesia (tingling fingers) are diabetes, inflammation, infection, vitamin deficiency and poor circulation. Following an initial consultation and examination, cervical spine x-rays and possibly more advanced imaging such as a cervical spine MRI and neurodiagnostic studies of the upper extremities may be recommended. These diagnostic tests objectively distinguish between disc failure (herniation) as the primary cause of the paresthesia and/or impingement further down the nerve..:aka peripheral neuropathy. Examples of peripheral neuropathy include cubital and carpal tunnel syndrome, in the absence of diabetes or other systemic diseases. Please forgive the detailed intro but it is necessary in order to answer your question. Spinal manipulation can and does help to reduce the symptoms that you’re describing if the primary contributing factor is one or more bulging/herniated discs. Other recommended chiropractic techniques include cervical traction, stretching exercises and having the patient purchase an orthopedic pillow for proper alignment while asleep. Tingling caused by peripheral nerve entrapments are more difficult to treat via spinal manipulation but can still be considered as an adjunct to physical therapy, acupuncture or more invasive procedures, if necessary.
