When you tell someone that your child has autism, how do they usually respond?

Most people don't really know what to say. Which is okay. Some people are quite educated and often know somebody on the spectrum, they are usually kind and informed. I really hate when somebody says something like "Aww, I'm sorry" or "That's too bad" or my all time least favorite response is "I think everybody is a little autistic"

How do you respond to their reactions? What do you say?

If they don't seem to know what to say I reassure them that it's okay. We're okay and it's no big deal. It's our reality and that's just fine with us.

What do you want others to know about autism? About your child?

Autism is not something to feel bad about. My child doesn't want you to feel sorry for him. He is a happy child and wants to be treated like all humans do, with love and compassion. Educate yourself, and never ever judge something you don't understand.
