Michelle Tyler Miller Celiac Disease

I am a 46 year old woman who was diagnosed with coeliac disease after being wrongly diagnosed with IBS and fibromyalgia for years. I was only tested for coeliac disease after fighting to get my 10 year old daughter tested for it and the results coming back positive. My symptoms were very different to my daughters symptoms....

What lifestyle changes have you made since your diagnosis?

I have cut out gluten from my diet and eat far less processed food.  I am still suffering from extreme fatigue so I have to be careful of how much I try to do in a single day.  I do what I can but when you have a young family, a full time job, a house and a dog some things have to give - sometimes the vacuuming doesn't get done, sometimes the dog doesn't get walked very far.  The laundry basket is always full but hey ho....

What impact have these changes had on your health and state of mind?

My 'IBS' symptoms have improved - I no longer have a permanent pain in my abdomen or pains in my feet.

I'm more 'relaxed' about the housework, even if my husband moans about the 'state' of the place.  He doesn't moan so much now as I always tell him that if he's so bothered by it then he should maybe do it himself.  Needless to say he quickly shuts up.

What advice do you have for others who are trying to incorporate these changes into their lives?

Read labels - if it says 'may contain' then avoid.  Learn how to make sauces from scratch as it will save you so much money and join the groups and forums that relate to your condition as you will get a lot of support and information from them as well as food and restaurant recommendations and places to avoid.
