Daphne Burchell: Share How Autism Has Affected Your Life
HEALTHJOURNEYS
Daphne Burchell Fibromyalgia

I am a 73 year old lady. I have been through the mill with this current condition and know what pain feels like. I thank my God for Durogesic patches and the love and support I get from my family and church family. Without this, I think I may have gone under. Please don't think I want sympathy because I know there...

Who in your life has been affected by autism and how?

My grandson and two granddaughters.

Where is your loved one on the spectrum?

The girls have only mild autism but the grandson is highly autistic. It has affected his looks. He cannot communicate or hold a conversation with you. I'm sorry I don't know numbers. I am the grandmother, not the mother.

What do you wish people would understand about autism?

He cannot help his behavior. It is not him. It is autism raging. He will get anxious and rant. He can't control this. He may enter a room and not speak, not because he is rude, because he can't. Please understand. When he was younger, we were even asked to leave a shopping centre, because he could not handle the noise, but after a lot of dollars and doctors over seas that has been taken care of. I just hate him being labelled rude or badly behaved when it is out of his control.
