If toenail is very loose and not attached to the skin underneath the nail then it is safe to trim some of it away. There are different types of insoles, also known as orthotics, that can help reduce stress and discomfort. Topical pain creams can also be effective. Stretching and ice also can help. Jonathan M. Kletz, DPM

If the toenail plate is infected with a fungus, then there are different types of treatment. Topical medication, oral medication and laser treatment can be done to help reduce toenail fungus. Corns can be caused by type shoes. The shoe pushes pressure on the skin, which has pressure from the underlying bone creating a corn. Changing shoes that fit properly and do not cause pressure is usually the answer. Jonathan M. Kletz, DPM

Dry, cracking skin can be caused by reduction in moisture with increased friction. Can also be caused by a fungal infection. If it's caused by fungus then topical antifungal creams can be utilized. Yes, there is a cure for toenail fungus. Sometimes requires oral medication. I would make an appointment to see a podiatrist and have a toenail biopsied to make sure it is a fungus. Jonathan M. Kletz, DPM

There are several home remedies to get rid of fungus depending on the severity. A lot of these home remedies are not very effective. Laser oral medication can be a lot more effective. Jonathan M. Kletz, DPM

Vick's vapor rub does have some anti-fungal properties. I find it more commonly used for toenail fungus. Some people also soak feet in cornmeal sometimes can help with fungus as well. Jonathan M. Kletz, DPM
