Academically, she graduated with her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997. She then went on to earn her Master of Public Health degree from the University of Virginia in 2006.
From July of 2000 until August of 2015, Dr. Shimkus served as a physician in the US Navy. Then, from 2017 until January of 2020, she served as a staff physician in addiction medicine at Right Path Treatment Centers (part-time).
Among her professional affiliations, she is a member of the American Pain Society and the American Academy of Pain Management.
