What areas of the prostate are used during a biopsy?
The usual approach is to do a transrectal biopsy which requires you to do an enema and take antibiotics before the procedure. The doctor then positions the biopsy device so that he obtains 6-12 cores of tissue, each about 0.5 cm in length and less than a millimeter in diameter. The prostate is usually divided into sextants (apex, mid, base x 2 for both sides). The localization helps with placement of radioactive seeds if any cancer is found. READ MORE
