  • What kind of anesthesia do you get for prostate biopsy?

Great question. We typically give intravenous sedation for prostate biopsies. This is referred to as MAC anesthesia which stands for Monitored Anesthesia Care. What that means is that you will be sedated, but still breathing on your own so there's no need for any type of breathing tube in your mouth. Your heart rate, electrocardiogram (ECG) , blood pressure and " oxygen saturation levels" will be monitored for the entire case. You will be given supplemental oxygen via a face mask or nasal cannula. Chances are that you will have no memory of the procedure. The drugs given for sedation produce amnesia for a short time. Most patients are fine not knowing or remembering entering the operation room. You'll also receive some pain medicines so that when you're finished, you're comfortable. Our medicines are both fast acting and quick to "go away" so there's typically no hangover feeling. While you'll most likely feel clear headed when you leave the place of surgery, you'll be instructed to go home and take it easy for 24 hours. This means no driving, no big decision making and no alcohol. You'll also be told that you can eat, but to start with some lite items and ease back into your regular diet. You will be given clear instructions for your postoperative care by the nurses in the postoperative care unit. If you have any questions prior to your surgery, you should call your surgeon or the anesthesia providers before your case. Finally, every person is different and every anesthetic is tailored to each individual patient so your anesthetic for your prostate biopsy may be different than described above. READ MORE
