With nearly five decades of experience, he is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

When HIV arose, Dr. Rhame returned to his first love: virology. Since then, his clinical, research, and educational focus has been on HIV, hepatitis C, influenza, Zika virus, and respiratory syncytial virus. He treats general infectious diseases in the clinic and inpatient consultation at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

During 2018, he received payments from Gilead Sciences ($19,940), ViiV Healthcare ($10,760), Simply Speaking ($3,150), and the University of Minnesota ($850) for attending four speaker training meetings, attending three webinars, participating in three advisory boards, and delivering nine lectures.
