Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Shakil A. Khan, who serves patients in Birmingham, Alabama.

Recognized by patients and colleagues for his brilliance, humility and compassion, Dr. Khan continues to nurture and heal patients with the gold standard of care as a child and adolescent psychiatrist. He served as the Medical Director at Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services from August of 1997 until November of 2020. 

Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services is the only free-standing, full-service psychiatric hospital in the Greater Birmingham, Alabama area. The campus-like setting provides an active, positive treatment environment for patients and their families. Drawing from a rich tradition in treating psychiatric illness for more than 95 years, Hill Crest remains committed to incorporating new developments in behavioral health and offers a full continuum of care.

The staff at Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services consists of a variety of mental health professionals. The doctors have experience in child and adolescent psychiatry, with years of experience treating addiction and mental health disorders. 

In 1992, Dr. Khan graduated with his medical degree from the AUC School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1995 at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. For his specialty, Dr. Khan chose to serve at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, also in New York City, as a fellow in child and adolescent psychiatry until 1997. He trained with renowned clinicians Dr. Peter Weiden at Columbia and Dr. Jefferey Newcorn at Mt. Sinai.

Dedication to those with a history of sexual and/or physical abuse further developed Dr. Khan’s expertise in nurturing and healing patients. He seeks to improve each patient’s quality of life. 

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.
