Get to know Rheumatologist Dr. Rujuta Trivedi Saraiya, who serves patients in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Dr. Saraiya is a board-certified, fellowship-trained rheumatologist at WakeMed Rheumatology, located in WakeMed North Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her clinical interests include crystal, psoriatic and rheumatoid arthritis; connective tissue diseases, vasculitis and lupus; and musculoskeletal ultrasound. She is trained and certified in MSK ultrasound and interested in nutrition and its effect on the patient.

Treating the patient as whole, she focuses on combining traditional rheumatological medicine with alternative approaches, such as physical therapy or occupational therapy. She also believes appropriate use of medication, with the help of allied health care experts, in the context of the patient’s priorities serves the purpose of getting the maximum benefit to patient care.

Academically, Dr. Saraiya earned her medical degree from B. J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, India and completed her residency in internal medicine at Southern Illinois University in Springfield, Illinois. She then went on to complete her fellowship in rheumatology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

Ensuring access to the highest level of patient care, she is board-certified in rheumatology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Rheumatology is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases. Physicians who have undergone formal training in rheumatology are called rheumatologists. Rheumatologists treat arthritis, autoimmune diseases, pain disorders affecting joints, and osteoporosis. There are more than 200 types of these diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, back pain, osteoporosis, and tendinitis.

Outside of work, Dr. Saraiya enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, as well as watching shows and movies while raising her kids with family. She speaks English, Gujarati, and Hindi.
