Get to know Neonatologist Dr. Rita P. Verma, who serves patients in East Meadow, New York.

A competent neonatologist, Dr. Verma serves as the Director of Neonatology and Professor of Pediatrics at the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, New York.

Nassau University Medical Center is a 530-bed tertiary-care teaching hospital that has been the primary source of medical care for millions of Nassau County residents since 1935. A native of India, Dr. Verma graduated with her medical degree from the Lalit Narayan Mithila University in 1973. Upon relocating to the United States, she completed her residency in pediatrics and her fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at the SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Subsequent to her education, the doctor attained board certification in neonatal-perinatal medicine and pediatrics through the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially ill or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units. Neonatologists generally diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, as well as coordinating care and medically managing newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery.
