Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Winn H. Mathews, who serves patients throughout the State of Alabama.

Dr. Mathews is a board-certified general surgeon at The Surgeons’ Group, P.C., working alongside his father, Dr. John Mathews, in Birmingham, Alabama. He also sees patients at the following locations: Hueytown Specialty Clinic and Jasper/Gardendale Specialty Clinic.

Having demonstrated a willingness to reach out to this entire demographic that Brookwood Baptist Medical has served for many years, he is on the faculty in the Baptist Health Systems’ Surgical Training Program. He is also affiliated with Princeton Baptist Medical Center.

As a child, Dr. Mathews became interested in medicine and surgery during trips to Haiti. This was a remote area in the mountains of the southern peninsula, where he served with his family as missionaries. He had an aptitude for science, mathematics, and biology.

After graduating from high school with honors, he went to Auburn on an academic scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He was accepted to medical school at the Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama. As he prayed, he made a decision to pursue a career in surgery. He spent five years in a general surgery residency program – a program where his father was one of many surgical attendings. He found himself in the operating room where, as a high school student, he had worked as an orderly mopping floors and moving patients.

Continuously advancing his efforts, Dr. Mathews is a member of multiple societies, including the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the Society for the Surgeon of the Alimentary Tract, the American Cancer Society, the Jefferson County Medical Society, the Birmingham Surgical Society, the American Society for Breast Surgeons, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.

Spiritually, Dr. Mathews is assured of his calling as a general surgeon in an underserved area by joining the Surgeons Group, P.C. It has become apparent to all that he is gifted and has a special aptitude in the fast developing field of robotics.

His father is thankful for a like-minded partner who shares God’s calling to further his ministry through the works of Dr. Mathews’ hands.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, and gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.
