With a broad educational background, Dr. Kumar graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, and earned his Master of Business Administration degree from Robert Morris University. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA as a member of the Charter Class, in 1997.
Subsequently, he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital, followed by his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Pittsburgh, and his fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital.
Passionate about his profession, the doctor is board-certified in interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology, and internal medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (AOBIM). The AOBIM is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease in adults.
Achieving fellowship status, Dr. Kumar is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), and Fellow of the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI). In addition, he sits on the Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) Advisory Board for Gilead Pharmaceuticals, which reviews cutting edge medical technologies for PAH.
Prior to relocating to the Sarasota / Bradenton Florida area, he served as the Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 2005- 2006 and 2009-2016, and also as the Section Chair of Cardiology at the Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler, Pennsylvania from 2015-2016.
Presenting multiple lectures to varying audiences over his 16 years of Cardiology practice, Dr. Kumar served as Co-Director of a Peripheral Vascular Intervention Course in 2006 through the Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. He has also given presentations regarding heart and vascular disease to both the general public and children.
Interventional cardiology is the subspecialty of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter-based treatment of heart diseases. The field includes the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease, vascular disease, and acquired structural heart disease. An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist with one to two years of additional education and training in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular disease, as well as congenital and structural heart conditions through catheter-based procedures, such as angioplasty and stenting.
Recognized as a Regional Top Doctor by Castle Connolly Magazine, Dr. Kumar has been the recipient of the Top Doctor Award by Sarasota Magazine (2018-2021).
Prior to his medical career, he was elected Most Valuable Player twice and Co-Captain of the University of Pittsburgh Varsity Tennis Team. He participated in multiple Pro-Am tournaments and played and taught tennis professionally. He is also a certified tennis teaching professional from the USPTA and held regional rankings in the Middle States Tennis Association. He is married and has two children. He and his whole family are avid golfers.
