Get to know Anesthesiologist Dr. Wael Hassanein, who serves patients in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Hassanein is the Chief of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine at North American Partners in Anesthesia, and currently tends to patients at Pottstown Hospital in Pennsylvania. He has extensive experience in cardiac anesthesia, which involves being unconscious (asleep or sedated) and pain-free both during and after surgery, and works with each patient as an individual to provide the best outcomes.

According to Dr. Hassanein, his job is to ensure the safety of patients who are about to undergo surgery. He asserts that anesthesia is the practice of taking patients through a difficult time of having surgery and ensuring their safety by customizing a plan for each patient based on their health issues and kind of surgery.

Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Hassanein graduated with his medical degree from the Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine in Egypt in 1993. After relocating to the United States, he completed his residency in anesthesiology at Hahnemann University Hospital in 2004.

Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in anesthesiology through the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology.

In order to stay up to date in his field, Dr. Hassanein remains an active member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia, and the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, they measure the patient’s respiration.

During the Covid pandemic, Dr. Hassanein volunteered his time with local high schools and middle schools, administering vaccines to the students.

When he is not working, he enjoys traveling with his family. His favorite vacation destination is Maui, where he enjoys soaking up the sun and spending time with his loved ones. He also has a number of hobbies and interests, including cooking, gardening, swimming, spinning, and playing tennis. 

A devoted father, Dr. Hassanein loves spending time with his two boys and engaging in various activities with them.
