A native of Manila, Philippines, Dr. Sarmiento studied medicine at the Far Eastern University of Manila, where he graduated Cum Laude-Salutatorian and was a recipient of numerous academic excellence awards. After relocating to the United States, he performed his internship, residency in pediatrics, and fellowship in adult/child allergy & clinical immunology at the Rush Medical College.
Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in allergy & clinical immunology through the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI). The mission of the ABAI is to improve the quality of medical care by the development and utilization of professional and educational standards for the initial certification and maintenance of certification of physician specialists in allergy and immunology.
To boot, he is board-certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.
Allergy and immunology involve the management of disorders related to the immune system. These conditions range from the very common to the very rare, spanning all ages and encompassing various organ systems. An allergist / immunologist is a physician specially trained to diagnose, treat, and manage allergies, asthma, and immunologic disorders, including primary immunodeficiency disorders.
An authority in his field, Dr. Sarmiento was voted the Most Outstanding Pediatric Resident Award in 1991, and won the 1992 Alan Feinberg Award for best research, given by the Illinois Society of Allergy and Asthma.
