  • What does this jargon suggest?

This 'jargon' means that you have a shoulder injury. Sometimes this can be treated with therapy or injections. However, if this fails, this 'jargon' describes specific anatomy to the surgeon who will know what needs to be repaired. Specifically, the Labrum is a soft tissue lip around the glenoid portion of the shoulder joint which makes the shoulder closer to a 'ball and socket'. A SLAP lesion is a defect of the "superior" portion of the Labrum. in the shoulder. READ MORE

  • What test may be available?

A myelogram may be able to be tolerated, and possibly a post myelogram CT. While you will still need to lie down for a while, the CT is much faster to obtain than an MRI..... The CT has an advantage to see if the prior 'fusion' actually took. (while the MRI is actually better for soft tissues, like nerves.... since you can't tolerate this, a CT/myelgram may be the better option.) Some areas can put patients under anesthesia for imaging, but this is not very common. READ MORE

  • Why does my lower back hurt after working out?

If it hurts enough, see a doctor. Pain can come from a poor workout plan -- and therapy may help train the other muscles. Or, pain can come from something that an xray or MRI can identify. READ MORE

  • Could my c6c7 bulge be herniating?

It sounds like you are 'doctor shopping' too much. Or no one doc is helping you understand what is happening. It sounds like you do have a pinched nerve in your neck (the pain down your arm, and numbness in your middle finger. The upper thoracic pain can also be a sign of a pinched cervical nerve). However, on top of this you may have a shoulder issue (e.g impingment syndrome or other diagnosis), and you actually may have a strain. You other conditions suggest that you have insulin resistance: e.g. PCOS, Reflux, Fatty liver, etc. You will need to change your diet to address these metabolic problems. Some nutritionists can help with this. READ MORE

  • Can you help with spine pain?

This is a common diagnosis, very very common. And, yes, there are many operative and nonoperative options for treatment. One key is to have a specific diagnosis, which can give more precise recommendations. A broader discussion can be found in my book -- The Back Pain Solution. Or, go talk with your doctor READ MORE

  • Can a bulging disc be fixed without a surgery?

It depends upon what is meant by a bulging disc. Lots of normal discs bulge. The problems occur if the bulge, or hernia is real big, or the bulge has lots of tears in it. Or a problem occurs if the bulge pinches a nerve causing nerve pain. READ MORE

  • Could my c6c7 bulge be herniating?

Yes, it could. You may also have a shoulder issue in addition. Shoulder blade pain can also be a sign of a pinched nerve in your neck. also, metabolically, you have signs of insulin resistance (PCOS, Fatty liver, hypothyroid). READ MORE

  • I'm having pain along my spine. Will a chiropractor help me?

A chiropractor or physical therapist (each has particular training and skills), can help with initial back pain treatments. However, if this continues, you may need further evaluations and tests to include xrays and MRI (for example). And some people don't respond to physical therapy and chiropractic care, and actually do better with surgery. It all depends upon the diagnosis. READ MORE

  • Will I be able to bend after scoliosis surgery?

I have people who can still bend forward and touch their toes after scoliosis surgery. The part of the spine that has surgery, won't move again. however, that doesn't preclude the rest of your body from working. Many people without surgery can't even touch their toes, so much of this range of motion has to do with other joints in the body, as well as muscle tightness. READ MORE

  • When should I be concerned about leg pain?

This can be a lot of things -- to a more dangerous blood clot in your leg that can break off and go to your lungs and could possibly cause severe respiratory distress. It could also be some pinching of the nerves in your back, leading toward something called neurogenic claudication. (pain in legs when walking, if not due to blood flow problems,) Your complaints should be evaluated in person by someone who know what questions to ask, what to examine, and what tests to get. • How long does it take to get well after herniated disc surgery?

look for actual patient discussion of their experience post op on my youtube channel. READ MORE

  • What are the risks involved in back surgery?

Talk with your doctor. It depends upon what type of surgery, and why you are having the surgery. It also depends upon how healthy you are to start out with. You may get some other answers in my book -- THE BACK PAIN SOLUTION. It can be found on Amazon. READ MORE

  • Is scoliosis surgery life threatening?

There are always risks, even of dying with any surgery. But, overall, the risk is very, very low. READ MORE

  • How long does it take to recover from spinal stabilization surgery?

The initial results vary from patient to patient. Some walk their dogs a mile 2 days after surgery. Others take months to recover. You can see what some people say about their recovery on my youtube channel. Patients have volunteered to talk about their experiences here to share for other patients. READ MORE

  • How long is bed rest after scoliosis surgery?

I have most people up walking the day of surgery. The days of bedrest for the treatment of back pain, or for after surgeries, are pretty much over. READ MORE

  • How soon can you walk after scoliosis surgery?

  • Do all herniated discs need surgery?

No, they don't. Over 80% of people I have seen over the years (as a spine surgeon) have been treated nonoperatively. READ MORE

  • Is there any way to ease sciatic nerve pain?

If a nerve is being pinched by either a herniated disc or arthritis in the back (two common reasons), then the goal is to either decrease the inflammation of the nerve so it doesn't hurt so much, or to take the pressure off the nerve. So, it could be medication, injections, exercises, PT, or traction (for example) Or, it could mean surgery. It all depends how long and how bad it is. READ MORE

  • What does a discogram involve?

If your doctor who is doing the procedure hasn't explained it well enough for you to understand, then you probably shouldn't have it done by that doctor. Basically, the test involves putting a very skinny needle into the middle of a disc in the back. (imagine the disc like a jelly donut, and the needle goes there). Needles are put in a few discs (because it is important to see if any discs are normal as well). Fluid, usually a dye or contrast, is put into the disc -- and the pressure in a normal disc feels like pressure. But, in some damaged discs, if they are a possible cause of back pain, will no only show that the contrast leaks out, but also it can recreate the severe pain you normally have. Those two things are what we are looking for. READ MORE

  • What happens after spinal fusion surgery?

after surgery, you get up and walk. Then will go to PT. And, eventually, most people get back to living their lives. The vast majority feel much better and are quite happy with having the surgery READ MORE
