Get to know Physiatrist Dr. Thomas Agesen, who serves patients in New Jersey.
Dr. Agesen is a board certified physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatry), as well as sports medicine.
Currently, he works with patients throughout the Parsippany, New Jersey community at New Jersey Regenerative Institute, where he is a founding partner. He also sees patients at Garden State Medical Center in Toms River, which he joined in 2021.
His expertise encompasses sports medicine, electrodiagnostics (EMG/NCS), the treatment of acute and chronic tendon, ligament, and joint disorders, as well as PRP and other cellular regenerative procedures. Dr. Agesen also specializes in addressing acute and chronic back and neck conditions.
In collaboration with Dr. Malanga and Dr. Jay E. Bowen, he serves as the team physician for several local high schools and universities in the New Jersey area. He treats athletes of all ages and levels, ensuring they remain at the top of their game.
After graduating from Penn State University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance, Dr. Agesen went on to earn his Medical Doctorate from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1997.
Passionate about education, Dr. Agesen even earned the prestigious title of Chief Resident during his residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He later completed a sports and spine fellowship in nonoperative sports injury treatments under his mentor, Dr. Gerard Malanga, at the Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation.
Following his fellowship, Dr. Agesen worked briefly as an attending at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. He then joined Associates in Rehabilitation Medicine for four years, after which he started New Jersey Sports Medicine, LLC with Drs Malanga and Bowen.
In practice for over two decades, Dr. Agesen is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and in sports medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR). The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).
On a professional level, Dr. Agesen is an active member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
