Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Mike Cusnir, who serves patients in Florida.
A seasoned hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Cusnir is the Chief of the Division of Hematology & Oncology and Co-Director of Gastrointestinal Malignancies at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Florida. He has a special interest in gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and head and neck malignancies.
Passionate about educating future medical generations, he holds academic titles from the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University, and has been named attending of the year by residents and interns for multiple years.
In regards to his educational background, Dr. Cusnir graduated with his medical degree from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Faculty of Medicine in Bogotá, Colombia in 1994. He then relocated to the United States, performing his residency in internal medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York in 2000.
From there, he went on to complete a fellowship in hematology and oncology with the University of Maryland Medical System, where he served as chief fellow during the last year of his training in 2003.
Years later, in 2012, Dr. Cusnir completed a two-year fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona. He has been incorporating the techniques he learned there into his general clinical practice and developing novel clinical trials of integrative medicine for oncology patients.
Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Since joining Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2003, Dr. Cusnir has been active in clinical trials and has published multiple articles.
Among his professional affiliations, he is an active member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Hematology.

A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of blood diseases and cancers such as iron-deficiency anemia, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, leukemia, and lymphoma.
