Offering his services and treatment options in cardiology, Dr. Erwin III is the Louise W Coon Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at NorthShore University HealthSystem, a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, as well as treats patients at both NorthShore Medical Group – Evanston & NorthShore Cardiovascular Institute.
He began his tenure with NorthShore in April of 2020 after having served as Clinical Professor and Dr. A. Ford and Brooksie Nell Boyd-Wolf Endowed Department Chair of Internal Medicine and Senior Staff Cardiologist at Baylor Scott and White Health and Texas A&M University College of Medicine.
While his main clinical focus is in general cardiology, Dr. Erwin III is most interested in how cardiovascular disease affects the quality of life of a person and how he can help people to understand their illness in order to become an active partner with them in navigating the complexities of care. He also firmly believes that a person cannot be truly well unless they are well in mind, body, and soul.
His areas of expertise include atrial fibrillation, chest pain, CHF, cholesterol management, coronary artery disease, coronary disease, dyspnea, general cardiology, hypertension, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, preventive cardiology, sports medicine, and valvular heart disease.
Born and raised in Texas, Dr. Erwin III graduated with his medical degree from the Texas A&M College of Medicine in 1992. He then went on to perform both his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine; Graduate Medical Education, and a level II fellowship in cardiac CT angiography at the Princeton Longevity Center.
Subsequent to his training, he attained board certification in cardiovascular disease through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Holding fellowship status, Dr. Erwin III is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), a Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA), and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).
In addition, he serves on the NorthShore University HealthSystem Board of Directors, on the MedAxiom Board of Managers, and has held a number of ACC leadership positions, including governor of the ACC’s Texas chapter.
