How long is physical therapy needed for wrist pain?
Three to four weeks typically, and it depends on the actual problem. Both physical therapists as well as hand certified occupational therapists would be able to help. Wrists are tricky and need protection and an accurate diagnosis - anatomical and functional. There are also special injections called PRP - platelet rich plasma and a somewhat more complicated non surgical injection mesenchymal stem cells. Both come from you and the concentrated platelets or stem cells are injected into the affected joint space. One shot of cortisone can help for months, but you still need therapy and protection. If your pain is not coming directly from one of the small wrist joints, then it can be from the ligaments, tendons or nerves (like carpal tunnel). There are stretching techniques, strengthening exercises and protective devices for all of these. There are also ultrasound heating and "Fluido" therapies from the therapists. You need a therapist who knows hands and it should take about a few weeks, no matter what approach you take. All the best, Dr. P READ MORE
