Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Robert E. Exten Jr., who serves patients throughout the State of Ohio.

A respected hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Exten Jr. is on active staff at the following locations: OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital, OhioHealth Shelby Hospital, OhioHealth Hardin Memorial Hospital, and Morrow County Hospital.

OhioHealth is a nationally recognized, not-for-profit, charitable, healthcare outreach of the United Methodist Church. It is a family of 35,000 associates, physicians and volunteers, and a network of 12 hospitals, 200+ ambulatory sites, hospice, home health, medical equipment, and other health services spanning 47 Ohio counties.

In the early days of his academic career, Dr. Exten Jr. graduated with his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1975. He then went on to perform his internship at Akron General Medical Center in 1976, his residency in internal medicine at Akron General Medical Center in 1979, and his fellowship in hematology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in 1981. 

A member of the American College of Physicians, he is board-certified in hematology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of blood diseases and cancers such as iron-deficiency anemia, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, leukemia, and lymphoma.

Among Dr. Exten Jr.’s most notable achievements include Patients’ Choice Award (2015), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2015), and On-Time Doctor Award (2016, 2015).
