In the early days of his academic career, Dr. Exten Jr. graduated with his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1975. He then went on to perform his internship at Akron General Medical Center in 1976, his residency in internal medicine at Akron General Medical Center in 1979, and his fellowship in hematology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in 1981.
A member of the American College of Physicians, he is board-certified in hematology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
