Johann A. Potgieter received his medical degree in 1984 from the Stellenbosch University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He later completed advanced training in surgery before entering private practice. Dr. Potgieter serves on the Executive Council of the South African Society for Endoscopic Surgeons and has been awarded the coveted title of Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa. He is a highly-trained and qualified surgeon who has been practicing for more than 33 years and is currently serving patients at J.A. Potgieter and Associates in Cape Town, South Africa. He is also affiliated to Netcare N1 City Hospital. General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. Bariatric surgery includes a variety of procedures performed on people who are overweight or obese. The most common bariatric surgery procedures are gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. Dr. Potgieter has vast expertise in several areas relating to his line of work as a general surgeon, but has become particularly renowned as a specialist in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and vascular surgery, as well as an expert in bariatric surgery. He attributes his success to hard work and his love for his profession. In his spare time, he enjoys classical music.
