  • What happens if a pregnant woman is exposed to radiation?

    CT risks during pregnancy: If the abdomen or pelvis is not being imaged, such as in chest or head CT, there is no risk to the baby from radiation. The amount of radiation used in normal CT imaging has never been shown to cause harm to an unborn child. However, if the CT scan examines the abdomen or pelvis area, then there may be a very slight risk to the baby. An unborn baby exposed to CT during pregnancy may have about a one in 1,000 greater chance of developing a cancer as a child. The level of risk is not proven though, and may be nonexistent. The radiologist (a doctor with expertise in medical imaging) and the CT technologist will adjust the CT exam techniques to lower the radiation dose to your baby if they know you are pregnant. You should not refuse a CT exam necessary for diagnosing your potentially serious or urgent illness because of fear of radiation. The most important factor in having a healthy baby is ensuring a healthy mother, because the baby depends on the mother to stay well and carry her pregnancy to term. The goal is to take care of the mother, who has a much greater chance of developing a serious illness, such as appendicitis . READ MORE

  • Avascular necrosis staging?

    I would say the findings are at least intermediate given the well formed serpentine white lines overlying the femoral head. The medial (inside) of the femoral head may have an abnormal step off, which can indicate articular collapse and therefore advanced changes. Also, there does appear to be advanced arthritis super imposed upon AVN. Time to go see a hip surgeon. All the best. READ MORE

    It's variable, but with modern CT, very low. Consider MRI over CT; no radiation here. READ MORE

  • How can you prevent radiation from a CT scan?

    Prevention is impossible. Your breasts can be shielded. If your pelvis is not being scanned, then your pelvis can also be shielded. The dose reduction with modern CT scanners is amazing. Radiation is now essentially down to the same dose as an X-ray. READ MORE

  • Is this findings from my upper left arm anything to worry about results from a MRI?

    Judging just from your report, I'd say no, but my being a radiologist, I'm limited by not being able to see the images. However, I'd have to say that unless you have some strenuous workout regimen, stress reaction in the humeral diaphysis would be most unusual. In adults, mid-diaphyseal lesions are typically considered until proven non-aggressive. I'd ask for diffusion weighted images, which is sort of the MRI equivalent to a PET scan....in other words, DWI can help discern between benign and malignant findings. It's basically a 90 second sequence that they should do without extra charge. Hope this helps and all the best... READ MORE

  • How long does it take to recover from radiation therapy?

    That is variable and depends on your location and extent of your tumor, your age and your overall underlying health in addition to the condition requiring radiation.   • Can you detect breast cancer with a CT scan?

    The short answer is yes, but not in all cases and subtypes. Mammography is currently the gold standard. If you have 'dense breasts' and/or a higher risk for breast cancer (BRCA1, etc.), mammography may be augmented with MRI. Basically, CT is little to no role in detection, but can play a role in cancer staging. All the best. READ MORE

    The short answer is no, it is not. You did receive radiation, but imaging dosages are literally orders of magnitude less than therapeutic radiation doses. If this persists or worsens, perhaps a visit to your doctor would be helpful. All the best... READ MORE

  • What will an x-ray show for back pain?

    In a guy your age (if history of trauma), can show fracture. If no trauma, then early changes of degenerative disc disease or any number of forms of arthritis. There are numerous things that can also cause back pain, even in a young guy like you...kidney stone, for example. Kidney stone may be seen on spine X-ray, as well.     Went here for imaging and met Dr. Kilpatrick who was really kind and understanding that I was nervous. Great place for imaging- very convenient.

Dr. Kilpatrick received his medical degree in 1998 from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Thereafter, he completed his OB/GYN internship with Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital, in Columbia, South Carolina, followed by his Diagnostic Radiology residency with the Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia. Wanting to continue his training, he completed his MRI and Advanced Imaging fellowship with ProScan MRI Education Foundation. Dr. Kilpatrick is certified by the American Board of Radiology. He is also a professional member of the American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America. He has been the lead radiologist for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks and several other regional high school and college athletic programs.
