Dr. John H. Matsuura is a fellowship-certified vascular surgeon who diagnoses and treats patients at the East Hawaii Health Vascular Clinic at Hilo Medical Center in Hilo, Hawaii. Furthermore, he has staff memberships at several local hospitals, including Hilo Medical Center. With a professional journey that spans twenty-five years, he has expanse expertise in procedures such as angiogram with intervention, arterial and venous reconstruction, treatment of aortic and iliac aneurysm, carotid endarterectomy varicose vein therapy, and arteriovenous access for hemodialysis. Dr. Matsuura is an expert of the Magellan System, a revolutionary robotic catheter system. Prior to his current endeavors, Dr. Matsuura served as a Vascular Surgeon with Premier Vascular Surgeons in Centerville, OH, and Professor of Surgery at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University/Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH. He also worked at the University of Iowa School of Medicine and the Des Moines University School of Medicine in Iowa, as well as the Medical College of Georgia, Emory University School of Medicine, and Atlanta Medical Center in Georgia. Matsuura spent some time in the U.S. Air Force, serving at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Castle Air Force Base in California as Major and General Surgeon with the 93rd Medical Group. He was honorably discharged in 1998. He dedicates his spare time to snorkeling and skiing.

A fellowship-trained vascular surgeon, Dr. Matsuura works within the East Hawaii Health Vascular Clinic at Hilo Medical Center in Hilo, Hawaii. Some of the procedures that he performs include angiogram with intervention, arterial and venous reconstruction, aortic and iliac aneurysm, carotid endarterectomy varicose vein therapy, and arteriovenous access for hemodialysis.
The East Hawaii Health Vascular Clinic, located at 73 Puuhonu pl, Suite 100, has expertise in the diagnosis and care of patients with diseases and disorders affecting the arteries, veins and lymphatic systems, excluding vessels of the brain and heart. The providers are trained in the treatment of vascular disease by medical non-surgical means and work alongside other physicians, managing disorders related to the vascular system and performing operations to treat vascular trauma.
Upon graduating with his medical degree from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Dr. Matsuura went on to further his education. He performed his residency in general surgery at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University, his fellowship in vascular surgery at the Medical College of Virginia, and his research fellowship in vascular surgery at the Medical College of Virginia.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
