Get to know Neurologist, Vascular Neurologist, and Neurointensivist, Dr. Rodney O. Leacock, who serves patients in Columbia, South Carolina.

Dr. Leacock is a neurologist, vascular neurologist, and neurocritical care physician with Prisma Health Neurosurgery – 3 Med Park in Columbia, South Carolina. His clinical interests include acute ischemic stroke, intracranial and subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral aneurysms, AVM, intracranial and extracranial carotid and vertebral artery disease, stroke prevention and rehabilitation, status epilepticus, and airway protection in patients with neurological disorders. Dr. Leacock is licensed to practice in the states of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Missouri. 

Dr. Leacock acquired his medical degree in 1992 from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC. he then completed his internship at the same educational venue, followed by his neurology residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1995 – 1998). He completed a neurocritical care fellowship at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, as well as a stroke fellowship at St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Leacok received his undergraduate degree, i.e., his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, at Concordia University in 1985.

Upon the completion of his training, Dr. Leacock obtained board certification in neurology and vascular neurology from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation that was founded in 1934 as a method of identifying qualified specialists in psychiatry and neurology. The ABPN is one of 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. He is also board-certified in neurocritical care through the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties.

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the central and peripheral nervous systems, including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle.

Vascular neurology refers to the diagnosing, treating and managing conditions of cerebrovascular disease, which are conditions that affect the blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord. Stroke is the most common cerebrovascular disease – hence the “stroke doctor” nickname.

Neurocritical care is a medical field that treats life-threatening diseases of the nervous system and identifies, prevents, and treats secondary brain injury. The doctors who practice this type of medicine are called neurointensivists.
