Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Joseph M. Rochford, who serves patients in Hillsborough, New Jersey. 

Dr. Rochford is one of the most experienced psychiatrists in the United States. He is currently in private practice in Hillsborough, New Jersey, where he treats patients with a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and ADHD. 

Dr. Rochford is also affiliated with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset. Founded in 1899, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset provides comprehensive emergency, medical/surgical, and rehabilitative services to residents throughout central New Jersey.

Dr. Rochford earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University and his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. Thereafter, he went on to complete his residency in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. After completing his training, he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Rutgers Medical School. 

Upon entering private practice, Dr. Rochford subsequently became the Medical Director of the Carrier Foundation – a private psychiatric hospital in New Jersey. Following this, he became Medical Director of the Department of Psychiatry at Somerset Medical Center, where he served from 1990 to 2000. 

Dr. Rochford is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the public interest and the professions of psychiatry and neurology by promoting excellence in practice through certification and maintenance of certification processes.

In one of the most complex and rapidly-changing specialties in medicine, Dr. Rochford has maintained an in-depth knowledge of the latest findings in psychiatry. He has also long managed to keep his practice up-to-date, while having a caring and personable rapport with his patients.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behaviour, cognition, and perceptions. Over the course of his career as a psychiatrist, Dr. Rochford has helped countless patients overcome the challenges of living with mental disorders. He primarily treats adults, as well as some adolescents. “I wanted to pursue a career in something that was meaningful and would be helpful to other people. I had always been interested in science but also in humanities. Psychiatry was right at the crossroads between the two and so it seemed to be the perfect fit” said Dr. Rochford. 

Having practiced for many years, Dr. Rochford has witnessed some of the most monumental changes in psychiatry, including the rise of psychopharmacology and revolutionary technologies such as neuroimaging. 

As for his personal life, Dr. Rochford lives on a horse farm with his wife, Barbra, who is a family lawyer and who competes in equestrian events in her free time. He has two sons, one of whom lives in Florida and the other in New York City. In his spare time, Dr. Rochford enjoys outdoor activities such as jogging, biking, skiing, as well as playing golf and tennis.
