Can you live a normal life after heart valve replacement?
Many people live a much better life after a heart valve replacement. How much better depends on your underlying heart condition. I would recommend speaking with your cardiologist that knows the specifics of your individual heart condition and risks associated with the procedure. READ MORE
Should I go to the ER for a herniated disc?
A patient with a herniated spinal disc that is having severe pain, or new numbness/weakness in their extremities, or suffering from groin numbness/incontinence should be seen urgently. If your physician cannot see you that day, I would seek care at a high level functioning urgent care (most urgent care clinics are not set up to take care of this), or an Emergency Department. You may need emergent X-rays or MRI, and spinal surgeon referral. Of course, your pain needs to be controlled, and you may benefit from steroids and muscle relaxers. READ MORE
When should you go to the ER for shortness of breath relating to covid-19?
You should seek immediate medical care whenever you are short of breath, whether it is due to Covid or not. Until a medical provider examines you, checks your oxygen saturation, and considers whether you need a chest X-ray, you are simply guessing. I am very concerned people could wait too long and suffer permanent disability or death by delaying seeking needed medical care. And many patients assume they have Covid, when they end up having a life-threatening condition that could be treated (like pneumonia, blood clot in their lung, etc.). READ MORE
Should I visit emergency room for my high fever?
Any time you have a high fever more than a day or two, you should be seen by a physician. READ MORE
Should I go to the ER for a UTI?

Can stroke be identified early in a person?
Early signs of stroke include confusion, slurred speech, facial droop, arm or leg weakness, difficulty holding a cup, difficulty with gait. Sometimes dizziness, double vision, and severe headache can also be a sign. READ MORE
How should I prevent heat strokes?
Heat stroke is a very serious and potentially deadly medical condition. Once you suffer from heat stroke, another is more likely. Be sure your daughter avoids medications which can make heat stroke more likely when she is exposed to high ambient temperatures, such as antihistamines and some of the psychotropic medications. In addition, do not exercise in the heat, as the calories you burn elevate your internal core temperatures; in addition to high ambient temperatures, this can contribute to heat stroke. Good luck. My son was bitten by a dog. Are there any signs to look out for in case of an infection?
Approximately 70% of dog bites treated in the Emergency Department get infected. I would recommend any dog bite that is worse than a simple “nip” be seen by your doctor. Signs of inception include redness, warmth, swelling, and drainage. READ MORE
What should I do if my child has a fever of 102?
If your child is older than 2 months, a fever by itself may not be an emergency. Children less than 2 months should be evaluated by a physician that day, as their immune system is not very strong yet. The question is why is your child having a fever? If the child looks ill, appears confused, appears short of breath, has abdominal pain, or has a rash with a fever, I would recommend going to see a doctor that day. The medical condition may not be severe. However, without an exam, there could be a significant illness. READ MORE
What are the first few steps in case of a cardiac arrest?
If you are experiencing chest pain, I would advise taking an aspirin and going to the nearest emergency department! If you feel weak or don’t have a safe ride, call 911 for an ambulance. If you delay, you could suffer a “cardiac arrest” and die. You asked what to do in a “cardiac arrest.” This implies that the patient is already unconscious and without a palpable pulse. In that case, start CPR, call 911, and ask for a defibrillator (if available). READ MORE
Is blood pressure levels of 210/100 an emergency?
A blood pressure of 210/100 is very high and could result in “end organ dysfunction.” That is to say that uncontrolled blood pressure as this can result in kidney damage, stroke, and heart damage. I recommend you consult with your primary physician or an emergency room as soon as possible for evaluation and further treatment. READ MORE
