Nutritional Tips for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Patients
What patients should avoid
Stimulants
People with Duchenne muscular dystrophy are not advised to take stimulants like coffee and alcohol. Although these can stimulate their senses, it can affect their sensitive muscles. So, instead of drinking coffee and alcohol, drink lots of water instead. The suggested daily intake of water is 6-8 glasses.
Food Allergens
It would be best for Duchenne patients to test themselves for food allergens before eating. This includes food additives, soy, preservatives, dairy, corn, and gluten. Getting tested will help the patient know whether some kinds of food can cause respiratory and digestive problems when taken.
