5 Complications of Ulcerative Colitis and How to Avoid Them
Eye disorders
In many cases, ulcerative colitis can cause problems in the eyes. This is linked to dehydration or improperly absorbed nutrients, and does not necessarily have a direct link to the inflammation caused by the autoimmune disease.
Some individuals experience uveitis, a complication that causes inflammation in the pigmented part of the eye. If left untreated for a long enough period of time, uveitis can progress into glaucoma and vision loss. An optometrist can help determine whether or not a person with uveitis is at risk of optical nerve damage, but the root of the disease remains ulcerative colitis, and long-term symptoms in the eye will only go away by treating the underlying condition.
