Diabetes Patients May Be at a Higher Risk for Strokes

Study has found links between genes, demographics, and lifestyles

One study, conducted by Antonino Tuttolomondo, published in the Journal of Diabetes and Metabolism, suggests that various risk factors associated with diabetes play a vital role in encouraging the development of ischemic stroke (ischemic pertains to the restriction of oxygen and blood flow in a certain region of the body). Key contributing factors that have been known to create the link between the two conditions include genetic, demographic, as well as lifestyle. The more specific, diabetes-related characteristics consist of hyperglycemia and vascular risk factors that include hypertension and dyslipidemia. Hypertension describes high blood pressure and dyslipidemia consists of an abnormal amount of lipids, or fats, within the blood.
