Dr. Nicole Alexandra Smith of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston offered some clarification on this data. She reveals some limitations in the study first. Researchers of the study did not have any information on the severity of each mother’s disease or whether or not they were taking medication. Additionally, Jølving and colleagues wrote that, “The results from our study suggest that children of mothers with RA have excess morbidities during childhood and adolescence when it comes to important chronic diseases,” but the actual risk is small.
