People with cystic fibrosis have sticky mucus in their digestive systems. They typically need to take enzymes to digest food and medications to stay regular. People who have CF and take digestive enzymes can usually eat pretty much the same foods as people without CF. However, people with CF usually need to eat more calories each day than people who do not have it. Eating nutritious and high-calorie foods is important to maintain weight and provide energy. By eating healthy foods, a person with CF can also have a stronger immune system and stronger muscles to breathe.

For people with CF, their nutritional needs are determined by the severity of their disease, their activity level, and their degree of malabsorption. Although individuals with CF usually need about 1 to 2 times as many calories as those without CF.
