Should a History of Cancer Be Considered a Workplace Disability?

Reminders for employers

The American Cancer Society has a project called Workplace Solutions aimed at employers to help them with the sometimes-difficult task of handling employees with cancer.

It is an unfortunate but true fact that cancer is a burden on both employee and employer. It can result in lost productivity and sorrow. But never ignore the fact that you are dealing with another human being. Some of the hardest workers are ones who have overcome great adversity, and there are fewer adversities greater than cancer.

It may even be worthwhile to support your employee if they want to use their cancer experience to help other cancer patients. Fostering goodwill is always a good idea and it creates good publicity. People sometimes decide on which product to buy based on the good work done by the company.
