Compassionate release allows the prisoner to end their sentence much earlier
Federal courts have the authority to release federal prisoners before the end of their sentences. The Bureau of Prisons has the option of compassionate release “for extraordinary and compelling reasons such as imminent death or serious incapacitation.” Compassionate release sounds good, but the paperwork, bureaucracy, and delays make it nearly impossible.
