How to Be an Encouraging Companion to a Friend or Relative with Parkinson’s Disease
Hold conversations often and take an interest in their day - with patience
One of the main problems with Parkinson’s disease is that it impairs speech, and differently from patient to patient. Some people with the disease slur their words and speak similarly to one who has had a stroke, but others may talk faster than usual. Intense listening skills and patience should be exercised in conversations, as well as actively engaging in the patient’s words. Take the time to listen to their struggles and triumphs in everyday life, and try to see if there’s a way to help.
