Communicating With Those Who Have Autism: A Reminder for Healthcare Professionals

7. People with autism have a low tolerance for things that seem absurd or ridiculous

Sometimes, autistic people may come off rude because they might think you are being ridiculous. For example, when nurses ask repeatedly for a name and birthday, the patient might snap back because they feel like there was no reason to ask the question again. To them, it seems obvious that the nurse can find this information clearly written in the chart. Make sure to explain to your patient exactly why you need them to repeat information for you.
