Betty Vertin had been traveling for years to Kansas City, only to give her children the medication required. This was also a considerable distance, considering she and her family live in Nebraska.

However, the drug was able to delay the results of muscle weakness caused by the lack of a protein called dystrophin. Some advances have been made in the drug since the FDA approved it in 2016, which used the genes that code for dystrophin.
