Oncologist Questions

Should I schedule an appointment with a surgical oncologist?

For about 6 weeks now I have had what looks like a bruise on my breast, it started out looking like a bug bite, but since has turned into a pale red or pink spot. Over the last 2 weeks it has been fading, but it is still there. My breast also has pain and feels heavy. This is not relieved with Motrin or naproxen.
I had a breast ultrasound done, and it came back normal with no lumps.
I went back to my OB to discuss the results and to question what other possibilities it is, and he seemed to brush it off saying it was probably a bug bite since the bruise seems to be lightening up. However to make me feel at ease he gave me a referral to a breast specialist who is a surgical oncologist.
My question is, should I go see the breast specialist? I don’t want to be made feel like I am over reacting. I don’t have insurance either so the appointment alone would cost almost $400. I don’t want to waste the money if there is nothing to worry about.

Hello,

You are a 27 year old woman who has a bruise on your breast with other symptoms. An ultrasound showed no abnormalities. Your OB thought that the abnormalities are due to a bug bite since over time the symptoms are improving. However the symptoms are not completely gone and you have an appointment with a surgical breast specialist for an opinion.

The only way to be certain that the abnormality isn’t something more serious than a bug bite is to have a biopsy of the affected area. Since this area is concerning to you it is wise to have a specialist talk to you and examine your breast. Because this might be expensive you might consider an alternative source for a second opinion such as your local county hospital which should be able to provide services to you despite your lack of insurance. You should check into local services at your county hospital.

The reason for this is the unlikely possibility that cancer may be presenting with your symptoms. Early breast cancers are very curable with appropriate therapy. If you are in Southern California you might consider City of Hope as a possible source for an opinion. They have had free care budgets for more than 100 years, but I am not sure about their current policies.

Good luck.
