What antibiotics treat tonsillitis?

My daughter has tonsillitis. I want to treat it. What antibiotics treat tonsillitis?

Some common antibiotics that may be prescribed to treat tonsillitis include:

1. Penicillin: Penicillin or amoxicillin are often the first-line antibiotics for treating tonsillitis caused by streptococcal bacteria.

2. Macrolides: In cases of penicillin allergy, macrolide antibiotics such as azithromycin or erythromycin may be used as an alternative.

3. Cephalosporins: Cephalosporin antibiotics like cephalexin may also be prescribed in certain situations.

It's important to consult with a healthcare professional who can evaluate your daughter's specific condition and prescribe the most appropriate treatment for her. They will consider factors such as her age, medical history, and any known allergies before determining the best course of action.
Unless allergic, penicillin V is still the best option. It is very targeted for group A strep and has minimal side-effects (except that suspension doesn’t taste very good). The dose is 250 mg twice daily for kids weighing less than 60 lbs and 500 mg twice daily for 60 lbs and heavier. It is very important to treat group A strep tonsillitis for full 10 days although the symptoms will likely improve much sooner than that.
Many physicians would recommend amoxicillin because the oral suspension tastes better, but there is no other advantage. Potentially, amoxicillin may have higher risk of allergic reaction or rash if the “tonsillitis” actually is undiagnosed mononucleosis.
