Allergist and Immunologist Questions Eczema

What are the possible triggers of eczema?

My son who is 4 years old suffers from eczema, which is triggered when he is exposed to certain conditions. But, we aren't sure what these conditions really are. How is eczema usually triggered? He gets this behind his ears.

Eczema while common is a complicated condition. There is a myriad of triggers - some allergic, most none - and no two patients are the same in terms of triggers. I would strongly encourage you to see an allergist for evaluation and to discuss proper skin care regimen which is essential and crucial in controlling the condition as there is no cure. While dermatologists can also help with that allergists are uniquely trained in managing this condition in the best possible way.

I am a registered dietitian - from my experience and knowledge working at an allergy center, children like this come in for immediate testing of food and environmental allergies. This will help depict the cause. You can try an elimination diet for a week and reintroduce the top 8 major allergens slowly to see if an eczema patch appears.
