Hand surgery can be done under local anesthesia, sedation , general anesthesia or nerve block or combination of them, it depends on the nature of surgery, the amount of work that needs to be done , your general health and surgeon’s and anesthesiologist’s preference. It will be discussed prior to your surgery.
Best to discuss this with your hand surgeon, as this depends upon the specific type of procedure that you are undergoing. That being said, some simple hand procedures can be performed under straight local anesthesia, with or without sedation. Other more involved procedures may require a nerve block of the entire arm or even general anesthesia. Good luck!
