Pediatrician Questions Hiccups

Why does my child get the hiccups so often?

What causes a child to have the hiccups? My daughter often gets them, and she gets very irritated--and I hate to say it, but I'm a little annoyed with them as well. We use home remedies to get rid of them, like a spoonful of peanut butter, and it does the trick, but we would rather avoid them.

Gas in the stomach is a cause. Check which foods cause gas and avoiding them might help.
It is commen for newborns to have hiccups do not worry about it
I do not think that we know the cause of hiccups. I tell my patients' parents to just ignore them. Expectant mothers often report that they feel the hiccups when the baby is having them in the uterus.
Does she drink with a straw? When she is drinking, does she suck in excess air? Try to avoid this and sometimes it helps get fewer episodes of hiccups.
