Speech-Language Pathologist Questions Speech and Language Problems in Children

My daughter has somewhat of a his when she talks. How can it be corrected?

My daughter has unclear pronunciation when it comes to a few different sounds. She even makes a hiss sound while talking sometimes. It isn't really a lisp. She is 4 years old, is it too early to see a speech language pathologist?

No it is not to early to see a speech language pathologist. The earlier the better to avoid maladaptive behaviors from setting in. Seek out a local SLP to help your daughter.
It is not too early to start seeing an SLP. I would recommend you seek an evaluation by an SLP.

Good morning,
It is not too early to consult a speech language pathologist. Depending on the error or concern, they can advise you on further services or if the error is age appropriate or not. Hope that helps.
No, it is not too early to seek help from a speech language pathologist. Because she is four, you might seek an evaluation through your public school district. an evaluation by a speech language pathologist will give you a better idea of what is happening with your daughter’s speech.

You can seek a speech/language evaluation through your public school (it's free) and/or through your medical insurance. Speech/language evaluations are usually covered. Just call them and find out how to do it. Both evaluations will determine if your daughter is eligible for therapy. I usually start working on lisps or tongue thrusts or s, sh, ch, j distortions around 5 or 6.
No, it is not too early to see a speech pathologist at 4. The earlier the better so that her errors can be corrected rather than turn into a habit that's hard to break.
No, I would seek out private therapy. She likely has a tongue thrust with it which can cause other difficulties. Feel free to contact me for more info.
Hello,

That's a great question. No, it is not too early. Speech therapy can start in the first year of life for some kids, depending on what's going on. A frontal lisp is typical until about 4.5 years old, then it needs to be addressed. It depends what kind of distortion she has on her S sound and what other speech error patterns are there. I have some resources on my website that show the development of speech sounds, you can check that out here: https://www.zahavafriedmanspeech.com/resources-1 (click "speech sounds developmental norms.") If you are in MA or CA, I can provide a free initial phone consultation to determine if therapy might be the right path for your daughter. If you are outside of those states, I would contact a local speech therapist.
Warm regards and happy new year!

It is not too early for speech therapy. Honestly, the younger we work with kids, the easier it is to correct. Otherwise, the misarticulation becomes a habit. Your daughter would be an excellent candidate for speech therapy from a certified speech-language pathologist. You may look in your area for an SLP that works with kids or check out my page at www.teletn.com if you live in TN or AL.

Hello. It is never to early to receive help :) Does your daughter have teeth missing? I have seen children loose teeth at an early age. Missing teeth can case distortion is speech. if not, and there remains a concern, contact her dentist tell them your concerns. They can examine to determine if there are any structural issues. If there are no concerns, contact her primary care physician for a referral for a speech language evaluation. I hope this helps! You are an awesome advocate for your daughter! Keep up the good work.
Hello,

No, I do not think it is too early to see a speech pathologist. In fact, the earlier the better. If you are noticing that she has difficulty producing certain sounds. I would suggest getting a speech screening or an evaluation to determine if the sounds she has difficulties with are age-appropriate errors.
I hope this helps.
